Cable Buying Made Simple: A Practical Guide for International Buyers

2026/09/01 09:32

Buying cable for an international project can feel complicated — different standards, endless model numbers, and technical terms in every quotation. This guide breaks the process into plain language, so you can specify, compare, and order the right cable with confidence.

1. What Is Inside a Power Cable?

A power cable is basically several layers working together to move electricity safely from point A to point B. Understanding these layers helps you read a quotation and ask the right questions.

LayerFunctionCommon Materials
ConductorCarries the electric currentCopper (Cu) or Aluminum (Al)
InsulationPrevents short circuits and leakageXLPE, PVC, EPR
Armour (optional)Protects cable from mechanical damageSteel Wire (SWA) or Steel Tape (STA)
Outer SheathProtects against moisture, chemicals, UVPVC, PE, LSZH

Quick Tip: If the cable will be buried or pulled through ducts, choose an armoured version (SWA/STA). For indoor tray installation, a non-armoured cable is usually enough.

2. Five Steps to Choose the Right Cable

You do not need to be a cable engineer to make a good choice. Answer these five questions, and your supplier can recommend the right product quickly.

Voltage Rating: Is the system low voltage (0.6/1 kV), medium voltage (6/10 kV or 8.7/15 kV), or high voltage?

  • Conductor Material: Copper has better conductivity and flexibility; aluminum is lighter and lower cost.

  • Cross-Section (mm²): This determines how much current the cable can carry safely. If you are unsure, share the load current and installation method with the supplier.

  • Environment: Indoor/ outdoor? Buried? Marine/ offshore? Fire-resistant requirements?

  • Standard & Certificate: IEC, BS, EN, ASTM, CCS, DNV, UL — confirm what your project or local authority requires.

3. Common Cable Types and Their Typical Uses

Knowing the common names helps you communicate faster with Chinese suppliers. Below are cable families that Hualing Cable produces for export markets.

Cable TypeTypical UseCommon Models
LV Power CableBuilding power distribution, machinery connectionYJV, YJV22, YJV32, VLV
Marine CableShips, offshore platformsCEFR, CJPJ, CJPJR
Solar PV CableSolar power plants, rooftop systemsPV1-F, H1Z2Z2-K
Control CableSignal and control circuitsKVV, KVVP, KVVR
Instrument CableProcess instrumentation, twisted pairsDJYPVP, ICAT pairs
Flexible Rubber CableMobile equipment, construction sitesH07RN-F, YCW, SOOW

4. Why Certificates Matter

For export projects, certificates are often the gatekeepers. A quotation without the right certificate may be useless, even if the price is attractive. Always confirm which standard or approval is mandatory before asking for a price.

  • IEC standards (e.g., IEC 60502, IEC 60092) are widely accepted in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America.

  • CE marking / CPR is required for most EU construction projects.

  • Marine approvals (CCS, DNV, Lloyd's, ABS, BV) are mandatory for shipboard cables.

  • UL / cUL may be required for North American markets.

Practical Advice: When in doubt, ask your end customer or project consultant which certificate is required, and share that with the cable supplier at the quotation stage.

5. What to Include in Your Cable Inquiry

The more complete your inquiry, the faster and more accurate the quotation. Here is a simple checklist you can copy into your email.

For example, instead of writing “Please quote 4×4 mm² cable,” write:

“Request quotation for 500 meters of YJV32 4×4 mm² 0.6/1 kV copper/XLPE/SWA/PVC power cable, IEC 60502-1, FOB Qingdao, delivery to Alexandria.”
